The big controversy surrounding this book comes from Hunter S Thompson’s final wife, Anita Thompson. Notable by her absence in a volume which is essentially composed of talking heads, some further research reveals her direct opposition to the project, and an almost paranoid attack on it’s ‘author’, Rolling Stone editor Jann Wenner. In a recent blog, Anita wrote:
“Jann convinced nearly all of Hunter's friends to participate in what would be a "positive" book about Hunter. Then, using a cheap parlor trick, Jann excerpted and paraphrased the negative bits of interviews to weave a tall tale to trash Hunter.”
There certainly are one or two conspiracy theories which hint as to why Wenner would want to exact revenge on Thompson: chiefly that when Rolling Stone sent Thompson to cover the fall of Saigon, the writer publicly accused his editor of having cancelled his life insurance.
Conspiracies aside, this feels like a rounded portrait of the father of Gonzo journalism: we learn about his pranksterism, his marathon writing binges, his violent temper and his submission and retraction from alter ego Raul Duke. Above all, readers of his work will feel relieved that his life was as weird, twisted and downright hilarious as his literature.
