Self confessed ‘Becks-fuelled, park-dwelling miscreants’, FAVOURS FOR SAILORS have given us some excellent powerpop in 2008 - ploughing a nice Jags furrow, a la Gentleman Jesse. Via Stephen Malkmus.
Genre lovers among you could cram them in the same pigeon hole as Vampire Weekend and Tapes N Tapes - but you’d remain pleasantly surprised by Favours for Sailors added bite and VIM!
It says on their myspace site that they sound like the Minutemen. This is true! Especially on the middle bit of Shy Times.
It also says on their myspace site that they sound like Creedence Clearwater Revival. This is not true. But maybe they like them. Which means maybe at some point in the future they’ll do a cover of ‘Born on the Bayou’. Which would automatically be my single of 2009, even before I had heard it.
