Last week we felt pretty lucky to catch one of three live sets from the new indie "supergroup" The Babies! Consisting of members of Vivian Girls and Woods, The Babies have had one tune on the internet for quite some time now, but seeing them do a full nine song set we kind of fell in love with the band and their pop-punk hooks and off key harmonies. It was a really energetic and fun little set from these guys and we were hooked by the end of the first song.
The only downside to falling in love with this new band is that they don’t have an album out yet and it’s really tough to track down any music outside of "Meet Me In The City". Luckily, NYC Taper caught the band the next night at Glasslands and managed to record their whole set (download it here!) and we have been listening to it a lot over the last week.
The songs here are immediate and catchy, even if they are more than a bit raw and rough at times. Nora over at I Rock I Roll called their off key vocals "cringeworthy" but even she couldn’t argue against the how fun and enjoyable their set was. Likewise, the Glasslands set sounds like it was an absolute blast with the band ripping through the same set of songs including a cover of Juda Priest’s "Breakin’ The Law"!
Now we know the presence of two buzzy and backlash prone bands like Woods and Vivian Girls are bound to stir up a lot of mixed responses when they happen to join forces for a side project. We knew nothing going into last week’s shows but kept an open mind and wound up loving every minute of it. We’re hoping you’ll be able to put aside any feelings you have on either band, whether positive or negative, and take a listen to these tunes with a completely clean slate in mind. If you do there’s a good chance you might be jamming to these songs for some time to come.
