SINGLE OF THE WEEK: JEREMY WARMSLEY / LOSE MY COOL (TRANSGRESSIVE)
Apparently Mr Warmsley has been hanging around for a while now, although this single is the first thing I’ve heard from him. But then, I’m not particularly interested in music.
‘Lose My Cool’ kicks off sounding like a delicate, piano-led, folkatronica type affair, but then proceeds to “rock out” for the chorus, which is pleasant. He can have a bonus point for looking like one of the very few people I could beat up in a fight situation.
BLOC PARTY / MERCURY (WICHITA)
Another single from the NME-endorsed indie-rock hotties, doing their “intelligent nu-rave” thing. Not quite as good as the very excellent ‘Flux’, but enjoyable none the less.
THE GUTTER TWINS / GOD'S CHILDREN (SUB POP)
One of the Gutter Twins is Mark Lanegan, who has produced some sterling work with Queens Of The Stone Age and Isobel Campbell. ‘God’s Children’ is bloody awful, but you can’t win ‘em all I suppose.
THE MUSIC / THE SPIKE (POLYDOR)
Oh, look: The Music are still alive. The best thing we can say about ‘The Spike’ is that it’s not as terrible as it might have been, but then neither was the Cuban missile crisis and that wasn’t a whole lot of fun.
DELAYS / KEEP IT SIMPLE (FICTION)
Delays are great. ‘Keep It Simple’ comes from their third (third!) album Everything’s The Rush, and has an MOR pop sound that I’m quite fond of. Plus, as an added bonus, Keith from The Office is in the video. Not quite as good as ‘Long Time Coming’ or ‘Valentine’, but then few things are.
MIDNIGHT JUGGERNAUTS / INTO THE GALAXY (FAMOUS CHARISMA LABEL)
For the first 57 seconds, ‘Into The Galaxy’ sounds like it’s going to be some kind of tedious prog dirge (an impression fostered by the accompanying artwork). Then it abruptly becomes quite good. Apparently Midnight Juggernauts have toured with the likes of Justice and Klaxons, so if you like that sort of a thing you’ll quite possibly like this, or something. (We’re trying to get a quote used in an advert. Can you tell?)
Best new band in Glasgow, by a mile!
...Any more snooker cliches?
...Second track sounds like a more snarly mid-60s Who. Excellent.
...First one sounds like Sean Ryder having a flashback but second track is a killer.

The Binges - Hear Me Out
Nice! 80s cock rocking with a big fat ballsy production. Excellent scream at the start - he probably had to have a big gargle with listerine after that one before finishing the track. Like...
Excellent track from their excellent new (to the UK) album Forts (released this week, expect review here soon).
