SOMERSET HOUSE SERIES 2008 - PART TWO

2008-07-11 - Somerset House, London

Time for more action from the stately home of rock 'n roll - as Sam Crawford reviews the synth happy anarchism of Late Of the Pier, and the almighty techno-crunch of Justice...

Justice are arguably one of the most hotly anticipated acts to appear at this year's Somerset House Series, and their meteoric rise to notoriety is evident through tickets selling out long before tonight - even going for highly inflated prices on EBay.

It could be construed as somewhat of an anticlimax then, that when support act LATE OF THE PIER take to the stage; it’s pissing it down. Luckily though, they have the perfect antidote.

Excitable, synth infused disco music is what they deliver, being a fully assembled, four man party machine. They utilise retro electronic sounds, similar to effects you’d find on old school computer games, while Samuel Eastgate’s vocals hold the zest of a modern day Gary Numan. Some would call it new rave... I’d call it NinTrendo.

"when the rain joins in, everyone embraces it as something to celebrate..."

The dramatically unmistakeable sound of Cross’ opener – Genesis, booms out across the courtyard, signalling the mighty JUSTICE have arrived. Eighteen Marshall stacks light up in time to the music, with a huge glowing cross being the central focal point between Gaspard and Xavier. They must have done something to appease Tlaloc, as the rain has pleasingly vanished.

What an atmosphere: there’s huge smiles plastered across everyone’s faces, as well as waves of gyrating bodies from the front right the way back, as Justice proceed through most of the Cross material, with the renowned ‘We Are Your Friends’ remix appearing at various points in the set.

They close with a fast paced, techno led version of Metallica’s ‘Master of Puppets,’ and when the rain joins in, everyone embraces it as something to celebrate. We’ve all just witnessed something amazing; this performance will ensure plenty more packed out shows.
