We're not shy of the occasional 18th century pirate shanty record - but, as Rory Carroll reports, the genre is best taken in small doses. Therefore, we welcome this EP from Last Harbour - the final frontier in funeral pop...
Summer’s here and while the rest of us have been battling the pollen count and getting hopped-up on vitamin D, Last Harbour have evidently been locked away in some dank cellar and forced to watch footage of funeral processions, the increasingly feral Amy Winehouse, and people happy-slapping kittens.
That’s right - this EP isn’t exactly the uplifting summer tango that many of you will be craving; in fact, it’s bloody miserable and probably shouldn’t be wheeled out at any social occasions any time soon.
"A full length album cut from the same cloth would be hard to swallow..."
However – and this is important – beneath the misery and gothic rumblings lurks a trio of extremely well crafted songs. This record is full of sweeping string crescendos, haunting melodies and vocals straight out of Nick Cave and Mark Lanegan’s big book o’ singing styles.
A full length album cut from the same cloth would be hard to swallow, but as a showcase of unique musical talent this ticks all the necessary – albeit slightly gloomy – boxes.
