VILE IMBECILES + AWESOME COLOUR

- The Freebutt, Brighton

Tabby Kinder brings us this report from Brighton, where the sinister "death jazz" of Vile Imbeciles is infiltrating the minds of innocents...

Furious and uncompromising, Brighton based Vile Imbeciles shocked, stunned and probably deafened a few members of the crowd last week at the Freebutt, Brighton.

You can’t begin to comprehend what was going through the mind of the promoter who booked the lineup for this gig, as the dark, rhythmic punk noises of the Imbeciles and the bold stadium-rock sound of American band Awesome Color far from complimented each other.

A pizza being delivered to the stage set the scene for the Michigan based power-trio AWESOME COLOR, who play a mix of their 2006 self-titled album and a few ‘golden oldies’ for the loyal American fan base who’ve set up shop tonight.

"THEY PROVE THAT DECIPHERABLE VOCALS ARE A THING OF THE PAST..."

The band provided a rocket-fuelled blast of energy packed with howling lyrics and fiery guitar riffs that blew the crowd away.

Strikingly similar to Australian rock band Wolfmother and with tones of Death From Above 1979, this band would sound much more at home opening for a band like Foo Fighters at Wembley Arena – not the basement of the Freebutt pub.

While a jaunt to the venue takes you on a tour of the city’s dark and sinister back roads, so did VILE IMBECILES take us on an unsettling journey to the darkest reaches of nu-wave, goth-rock imaginable.

Eerily lit up in green, the band’s skin tight jeans and colossal amounts of hair were a shock to the senses, as front man Andy Huxley stomped around the stage to the band’s ‘death jazz’.

They’re a truly original quartet, who prove that decipherable vocals are a thing of the past – and that there’s no need to have method behind your madness if you’re out to astound, amaze… and perhaps violate a little bit.

And with ex-members of Neil’s Children and the hugely popular Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster providing lead vocals and bass guitar, how could you expect any less?
