++SINGLE++ review by Ric Rawlins
Ric Rawlins enters the Twilight Zone of singles known as "singles for the week beginning June 30"! What will become of him? What will become of his bushy eyebrows? What will become of you after you read his Satanic poetry? Find out here!
SINGLE OF THE WEEK: OPERATOR PLEASE / JUST A SONG ABOUT PING PONG (BRILLE)
Imagine a speed date with Operator Please. "Hi, my name is... Aaaarggghh!" they'd stick two chopsticks up your noise and kick you in the nuts before you even had the chance to spray mouth freshener in your gob.
This is rock and roll for people that live fast and die faster. It's also played at such a ridiculously excitable speed, that we think Operator Please should travel to Africa and challenge a pack of Cheetahs to a race. Cheetahs can run up to 75 MPH. We think Operator Please can top that. Just think of the PR opportunities!
"you might have to abandon this single..."
LIAM FINN / SECOND CHANCE (TRANSGRESSIVE)
Let's hit the beach! Let's get our trunks on! Screw it, let's take our trunks off! Now let's get out a ouija board and worship the Lord Almighty Satan our Supreme Being! - If like me you were happy to be at the beach party until that last request, you might have to abandon this single.
THE CORRECTIONS / OCD (EMI)
This band have taken too many drugs, walked down too many dark alleys, and had too many cigarettes stubbed out on their brains. In this case though, that's a good thing: this is a thrashy indie rock song that simulates the awe of witnessing a UFO.
LADYHAWKE / PARIS IS BURNING (ISLAND)
You know those people who can breakdance and make it look really fecking easy? This single breakdances, then spits in your face because you can't even do a jig. It's a slipstream dance number with a Eurostar vibe... which is... nowhere near as despicable... as that sounds. Yes.
VILE IMBECILES / BAD IDEAS (TEA VEE EYE)
A fair indication of what lies in wait for any poor mongrels who investigate their LP, this track is kind of like Beck dithering away from within a K hole. It's essentially an avant garde jam, which is quite pleasing if you're into slapping oil paints all over yourself.
