UNSIGNED TRACK OF THE WEEK (AS VOTED BY THE YOUNG KNIVES)
DEATH RAY TREBUCHEY / NUMBER 6
OLIVER: I liked that! It was lively, and although they compare themselves to Gogol Bordello, they're much better than that - even if the drumming was speeding up and slowing down! I couldn't tell what language they were singing, but apparantly it's, eh... English.
HOUSE OF LORDS: Lieutenant Meat was strange! I kinda liked the heavy rocking guitar and drums backing track, it sounded like Hot Snake, and their ilk. His vocals sounded a bit unsure and awkward though - a bit like Syd Barrett - over the heavy rock. I couldn't work out if I liked it!
DARK SPARKS / BLOOD PETROL FIRE
HENRY: A bit fey, a bit emotional, some jangly guitars and the singer sounded like his tongue was too big for his mouth. It had some nice changes in it, and not the worst thing I've ever heard. But maybe too serious and crying in your bedroom for me.
DINOSAUR PILE UP / I GET MY DIRECTION FROM
HENRY: I like Dinosaur Pile Up. They have a poppy Husker-Di kind of atmosphere, with nice vocal harmonies. It was stripped back and it sounds quite exciting, and easy to listen to. You could see where the recording let them down, so it just needs a little bit more shimmer, but they could be impressive! First listen? Quite good.
Best new band in Glasgow, by a mile!
...Any more snooker cliches?
...Second track sounds like a more snarly mid-60s Who. Excellent.
...First one sounds like Sean Ryder having a flashback but second track is a killer.
...once you've drunk a bottle of Maker's Mark in Copehagen?
...The more I watch it, the more I like it.
...Sex on Fire is good once you've drunk a bottle of Maker's Mark in Copenhagen
...Artrocker.com: Glasgow's a pretty hot city at the moment. I was up there just this weekend. What do you think is making Glasgow bands so hot right now?
...Excellent slice of full on old school rock from The Binges. Recommended by our readers, it's now a firm favourite in the artrocker.com office.
...Editorial incompetence at artrocker.com meant that the wrong Grates track was post earlier.
...Killer blast of pop punk from Auckland's The Sneaks. Stephen Malkmus has left Pavement, recruited Mike Watt on bass, written some songs with Rivers Cuomo and formed The Sneaks.
