Although it’s tracklisted second, "Deadbeat Summer" is the first actual song on Neon Indian’s Psychic Chasms LP and sounds like floating to the bottom of an aquarium, flanged everything and aqueous synths guiding your descent. The band were busy during CMJ last week (having another incarnation didn’t help) and are now touring towards the West Coast before heading to Europe and Oz. I just got done watching this bro ‘cover’ Grizzly Bear’s hit 2k9 anthem ‘Two Weeks’, and I couldn’t help but wonder if this bro has single-handedly proven that we no longer need the Grizzly Band Bears as an alternative resource of indie music.

I feel worried about 2k10. It seems like 2k9 is a year that we should feel ‘ashamed of’, and 2k10 is a year that we will sort of just emotionally ‘pull back’ our interest in tastemaking. I feel like 2k9 has had some ‘good products’, but maybe it was just a year where we are learning ‘how 2 use the internet’ when it comes to consuming music. It’s like we went to xtremes when it came to ‘experiencing’ and ‘analyzing’ music, and now we are just trying to work our way out of that era.
Seems like I am ready to ‘close the door’ on 2k9, and ‘fast forward’ beyond music in 2k10. I think in 2k10, we will sort of just stick with familiar bands, and not very many ‘new bands’ will emerge. We will stick with what is ‘comfortable’/’known products’, and just give a band like the Arcade Fire the top album of 2k10, just so we feel like ‘order’ is ‘re-established’ instead of giving 2 much ‘power’ to fresh bands.
Feel like reflecting on 2k9, even though there is still half a year left.
How will u remember 2k9?
Any band that is hand picked by a member of No Age to release an album on his label is gonna get more then its fare share of a look. Silk Flowers is just such a band. Signed to Dean Spurnt’s Post Present Medium label, the band recently came to my attention thanks to Spurnt’s pushing of the group. True he calls them "probably the weirdest band I know" and they definitely live up to that billing but there is something downright catchy about their music, even if you have to give it time to branch out and become comfortable in your ears.
It’s kinda weird how the musicsphere is searching for a new ‘authentic, undergroundish product’ that isn’t a huge brand like AnCo/GrizzBear/etc. People who ‘love music’ need new music to ‘get excited about.’ It seems like these ‘conceptual, chill projects’ are really ’starting to become mainstream alt rock’ or something. Think that these are apparently the next artists who we will ‘go to see at music festivals’ before ‘every1 finds out about them.’
I think that it demonstrates that a ‘new band’ can’t have too strong of a ‘personal brand’. It seems like if you start out being ’somewhat mysterious’, then ppl can write abt u when they ‘unmask’ u. It’s too easy to ‘not take a band seriously’ if you see pictures of them, and they look like dweebs/people who are ‘trying too hard.’ It seems easiest to have a chill project, that is somewhat ‘conceptual’ but also demonstrates that ur band has ‘pop sensibilities’ or something. Not sure what the ‘ceiling’ for these types of bands are. Seems like they will probably have to build their ‘live brand’ as being something that is ‘artistic.’ Most of these bands exist with ‘a few strong singles’, but seems like they will get enough ‘promotion’ [via maltstream weblogs+webzines] to be relevant in the market of people who ‘buy songs off iTunes.’
