SUICIDE (New York)
THEE original art-punks formed in New York in the early seventies they were part of that "pre-punk era" with all that bands from Max Kansas City and CBGB's (Velvet Underground, the New York Dolls, Ramones, Blondie, Dead Boys,
Wayne/Jayne County, Richard Hell, Lydia Lunch. Alan Vega out front replicated Iggy's confrontational performances, his muttering, shrieking, nervy delivery quite unique, sounding at once both fragile and threatening and both retro (think Elvis rockabilly overtones) and future industrial/synth-pop. Lo-fi technician Martin Rev on tinny Farfisa organ and the most primitive of drum machines added the minimalist grooves that caused complete bemusement and aggression amongst early punk crowds to whom they played (infamously on The Clash European Tour).
Their debut album 'Suicide' 1977 is being re-release this Autumn on it's 30th anniversary and the duo will be playing together to support it's release.
This is an extraordinary chance for a few lucky ones to see them in the wonderfully intimate setting of The Buffalo Bar.
Never matched or replicated they are hugely influential on bands as diverse as OMD, Human League, Spiritualized, Orbital, Pulp, Soft Cell, Nick Cave, Jesus & Mary Chain, Primal Scream, Chemical Brothers, right through to The
Horrors today.
THE SCARE (Birmingham)
The Scare live up to their name. Reports of ferocious performances at The Great Escape Festival have been circulating and friendship with fellow noiseniks Die!Die!Die! can't (can) help.
Frontman Kiss Reid comes on like a fired up Nick Cave circa Birthday Party while the band are a
bull-dozing riff monster. The debut single 'Bats Bats Bats' is out now on Dance to The Radio Records.
It's merciless hell beaten out of a Suicide riff for 3 minutes with the swagger of At The Drive In and groove of 80's Matchbox. Only a matter of time before they are head-to-head with fellow artpunks The Horrors.
