London

London (play /ˈlʌndən/) is the capital and largest city of England and the United Kingdom (UK). It is Britain's most populous and Europe's second most populous metropolitan area. A major settlement for two millennia, its history goes back to its founding by the Romans, who called it Londinium.[7] London's core, the ancient City of London, or the 'square mile' financial district, largely retains its mediaeval boundaries. Since at least the 19th century, the name "London" has also referred to the metropolis developed around this core.[8] In modern times, the bulk of this conurbation forms the London region[9] and the Greater London administrative area,[10][note 1] with its own elected mayor and assembly.[11]

So, holiday time is really here now, and the chances are you aren’t actually reading this at all, because you’re turning a shade of lurid red on a beach on the Costa del Sol, letting your full English breakfast go down, and waiting to go for nueve cervezas before bellowing ‘Eggo y Chippo por favoro‘ at a humiliated waiter. Thought: if we bring back straw donkeys...
We start with six guys on stage. Five of whom have beards. Two of them are respectively clutching a trumpet and a saxophone. I fear the worst. I am proved massively wrong. Far from being earnest and dour young miserablists being all lovelorn and sensitive, Woodenbox with a Fistful of Fivers are a jolly band of lads. The most cumbersome thing about them is their name. It...
We’re on Japanese time.Having seen the queues outside the Underworld and with firsthand experience of the way that J-Pop shows work, I’m glad I’m in position at eight o’clock sharp. Not that I’m alone. The venue is semi-jammed. Everyone is as close to the stage as they can possibly get and everyone is waving a glo-stick. There is lots of chanting and excitement. We’re here to see J-Pop...
THE band of 2010 already. From London, this is TEETH. Right in front of your face. Comprising of Ximon Tayki, Veronica So and Simon Whybray – a laptop, drums and femme vocals set up. [Video: TEETH - Confusion] -Video-   Now before any of you scream: “Crystal Castles rip-off!!” Hear me out. Okay, so the track See Spaces DOES sound a little bit like CC’s...
Dan Grose is a student in the dubious confines of Stoke-On-Trent, a grimy town now more famous for its extreme right-wing politicians and absence of job prospects than its music scene. It’s also my home town  – one that I left years ago – and I was interested to hear what was happening there now, and what an outsider thought. Dan spies the glint of treasure in the...

The Jim Jones Revue From: London, United Kingdom London rockers The Jim Jones Revue have risen from the ashes of legendary UK garage rockers Thee Hypnotics to deliver the world from the computer generated focus group pap that passes as music today. It’s savage, it’s raw, it’s exciting, it’s rock & roll in it’s purest form. With their new album, Burning Your...
New Black Light Machine From: London, United Kingdom Here come London’s New Black Light Machine to save the world from the Take That reunion and bury landfill indie for ever. Throwing angular nu wave shapes and jittery fidgety post punk moves the unbelievably cool looking quintet are heaven sent to rejuvenate a music scene that’s been looking a little frayed around the edges...

Carry Me In Your Backpack    Total carnage and garage rock riffs with splintering drums set the backbone for the songs of London duo FRIENDSHIP. Will de Witt (guitar, bass, loops) and Daniel Hills (drums, vocals) formed the band in 2007 and this April released a split 7″ with Die! Die! Die! after opening for them in Shoreditch last year. Released on Too Pure’s singles club...
Anna from London popsters My Tiger My Timing has taken time off from exercising her vocal chords to give the Devil’s blog an insight into her influences, the strangest place the band have played and her tips for saving money. The Devil: Why My Tiger My Timing? What other names did you ponder before deciding on this? Anna: ‘My Tiger, My Timing’ is a song by the New York...

London Reviews

This is Indie the way it should sound. Not total crap. I have to take my hat off to this lot from London - they’ve managed to pull off the enviable feat of sounding a lot like you should already like them, but having something fresh at the same time. You’re looking at a group firmly planted in the world of fast-strummed, bouncy guitars and sing-song vocals of...
Having been at Kings Cross’ Scala just two days previous for what may have been the most fun gig of the year (Dananananaykroyd), it was a strange feeling to be returning knowing that the bands of the evening were of a considerably more depressing nature. I knew it would be a strange contrast, but it would be worth it; though melancholic, the Twilight Sad’s use of layer and texture...
The Veils - Sun Gangs The third full-length from the Veils finds the band progressing from its folk-influenced beginnings to something comfortably bigger, as if writing anthems was never a stated goal, just an organic consequence. The brains behind the London-based crew is Finn Andrews (son of XTC’s Barry Andrews), who has an uncommonly good voice—versatile enough to sound natural...
A fair while ago we had a preview of some indie-upstarts French For Cartridge, and they’ve followed up the single release with a full-blown album. It’s been sitting in my to-do pile for far longer than it should have been. I never did like liquorice, unless it was cherry flavoured. I like this though. Since I was familiar with the opener ‘oooh!’, I skipped...
PENS- Hey Friend What You Doing? 8/10 Charmingly ramshackle and wonderfully youthful, London trio PENS create sweet scuzz thrash punk with a psychedelic twist. Opener ‘Horsies’ will have your head spinning with its repetitive keyboard riff and elliptical vocals. Swathed in even more noise, ‘I Sing Just For You’ is a coyly sweet ode once you get used to the distortion...
