photo: Jorge Stride This may come from being a Scot myself, or more simply a backlash against the Twin Atlantic-ism of sounding very fucking Scottish when singing, but I’m really not a fan of over-enunciated accents on recordings. When an unsigned band is named by the likes of Michael M of We Are The Physics as one of his top 10 acts of the year, you know they’re worth checking out. Ex Wives have been kicking around Glasgow for quite a while now, and been cranking out dismembered, scuzzy music for as long as I can remember. <!--break--> I wouldn’t want to do them an injustice by purely and lazily...
Julian Casablancas- Phrazes For The Young 8/10 Marrying sunny melodies with despondent lyrics, The Strokes’ lead singer and mastermind Julian Casablancas has shed his gritty punk rock demeanour for more eclectic experimentalism with his debut solo LP. Perhaps it was a determined move to ensure his detractors had a harder job pigeonholing him, harder than they’d have to try with...
Not content with sitting on their laurels after we awarded them our number 1 record of 2009 for Ballin Outrageous, The Zookeepers have returned to the studio and biffed out another LP. Holy shit. I guess when you’re on a roll… I must admit, part of me wanted to find something to dislike with their new LP - Good Looking Out. If I wrote another glowing review, perhaps people...
Along with a number of other bloggers, I did my fair share of hyping up The Soft Pack last year. And their debut album justifies all that enthustiastic frothing - because it is fucking ace. It’s the best debut album since Is This It changed the rock n roll topography 10 years ago. <!--break-->   The Strokes’ debut is an apt reference point, as The Soft Pack share some...
